SUMMARY:Finnish Genealogy Group of MN Monthly Meetings
DESCRIPTION:9:00 AM: Log On\n9:30 AM: Business Meeting\n10:15 AM: Speaker \nZoom \nSaturday\, March 8\, 2025 \nEvery Object Tells a Story \nOur March presenter\, Sirpa Tuomainen\, in her own words\, “I’ve always enjoyed visiting Finnish & Finnish-American homes as it’s been fascinating to discover what kinds of Finnish objects people have and are displaying. Different generations have different styles\, but there seem to always be certain staples. It had been my longtime dream to investigate this more closely\, and I was finally able to do it. My goal in this project was to explore why people have kept these particular artifacts\, how these items relate to their Finnishness\, and how this all comes through via the narratives they’ve shared with me.” \nLearn more about the Finnish Genealogy Group at FGGMN.ORG. Complete the contact form on our website if you are interested in sampling a meeting. \nEstablished in the mid-1990s\, the Finnish Genealogy Group of Minnesota (FGGMN) is dedicated to fostering connections and facilitating genealogical research for individuals passionate about exploring their Finnish ancestry. Open to all\, our non-profit group serves as a vibrant community where like-minded individuals with Finnish heritage converge\, providing a platform to exchange knowledge\, share experiences\, and forge lifelong friendships.

SUMMARY:Forest Finn Finnposium
DESCRIPTION:Saturday\, April 27\n11:00 am – 1:00pm CDT\n(12:00 pm – 2:00 pm EDT)\nZoom (Virtual) \nFinlandia Foundation National\, in partnership with FinnFest\, invites you to join the online “Finnposium” webinar on Saturday\, April 27\, 2024\, at 12 p.m. Eastern Time highlighting the nationally-recognized Forest Finn minority abroad and their current affairs in both Norway and Sweden. \nRSVP to the Finlandia Foundation Facebook event.\nRegister for the Zoom session here.\nFind more information on the Forest Finns Facebook Group. \nMore details about FinnFest schedule\, registration and information about lodging\, Tori booth rentals\, volunteering and sponsorship opportunities can be found at FinnFest.us. \n \nThe webinar will be moderated by Sarah Kammlah from Facebook’s Forest Finns in America\, a social network platform bridging the gap between America and the Forest Finn minority abroad. She will moderate a panel discussion of top Forest Finn experts and minority activists. Birger Nesholen\, Jan Myhrvold\, and IngMarie Bohmelin will discuss the riveting history and plight of this invisible culture. They will also touch upon the current “awakening” and governmental reparations which restore what was once lost due to the pressures of assimilating into much larger national cultures. \nThe Forest Finns\, introduced to FinnFest attendees by Sarah Kammlah last July\, are one of five national minorities in Norway ratified by the Council of Europe’s Framework Convention of National Minorities in 1998. America’s Forest Finn connections not only span the period of the New Sweden colonies but the generations that followed in the late 1800’s emigration rush. \nWhether you have Finnish American ties to Savolax and Karelia (Savonlinnan ja Karjalan läänit) or are interested in the current foreign affairs of this extended branch of the much larger Finnish family tree\, this thought-provoking and insightful webinar will enlighten your understanding of the Forest Finn people here in America and abroad.
