SUMMARY:Tia Keobounpheng: "Revealing Threads" exhibition @ Mia
DESCRIPTION:July 22 – October 29\, 2023\nUS Bank Gallery\nMinneapolis Institute of Art\nMinneapolis\, MN \n\nTia Keobounpheng\, Finnish and Sámi descendent\, uses her artistic practice to recognize her familial connections to both the colonizers and the colonized. “Revealing Threads” will feature her abstract tapestries\, influenced by traditional Nordic handwork techniques but infused with contemporary interpretations and symbolism. \nThe results speak to marginalized histories\, heritage\, and the complexity of personal identity. The works will be informed by a research trip to Sápmi\, the traditional land of the Sami people\, in fall 2022. \nKeobounpheng is a designer/maker and artist living and working in North Minneapolis. She is a recipient of the 2017 and 2020 MN State Arts Board’s Artist Initiative Grant\, 2018 McKnight Foundation’s Next Step Fund\, and 2022 MN State Arts Board Creative Support for Individuals Grant. Her work has been shown at the American Swedish Institute\, in Minneapolis; the Finlandia University Gallery\, in Hancock\, Michigan; the University of St. Thomas\, in St. Paul; and the Anderson Center\, in Red Wing\, Minnesota. Her laser-cut jewelry has been sold by design retailers across the country for over a decade.

SUMMARY:Publication Party for Shy Lands
DESCRIPTION:Sunday\, April 23\n2:00 pm – 4:00 pm\nDanish American Center\n3030 W. River Pkwy.\nMinneapolis\, MN 55406 \nDiane Jarvenpa announces the publication of her new book of poetry\, Shy Lands\, published by Blue Light Press! \nJoin her for a book release celebration Sunday\, April 23rd at the Danish American Center\, Minneapolis. \nRefreshments available and maybe also a few tunes. \n“There is a subtle and proficient music in Diane Jarvenpa’s poems. They derive their power from how deeply she sees and listens to herself and to the earth. We can both celebrate and grieve earth’s wonders\, those which are extinct and those which are gloriously still with us — if we immerse ourselves in the natural world and “let it enter and grow in our bodies.” – Freya Manfred \n“Shy Lands\, the country Diane Jarvenpa inhabits\, the country we all inhabit\, is ravaged and threatened\, but still\, with her power to convert the observed into a ‘cold wild song\,’ she finds for all of us some kind of inspired redemption.” – Tim Nolan \n“She uses words the way an impressionist painter deploys color\, ‘know[ing] how all this works\, the close and the distant\, / the heap and faded\, / the swoop and the click.’ This new beauty is only possible in a shy and quiet land\, the one she creates for us here.” – Joyce Sutphen

SUMMARY:Rekilaulu (beautiful & hilarious folk songs) – Virtual Singing Workshop
DESCRIPTION:Rekisongs are a beautiful\, hilarious kind of Finnish folk song. They were popular all over Finland\, especially in the 19th century Ostrobothnia. They were a creative outlet for the youth in particular. Rekisong is all about singing beautiful melodies and discovering rhymes. Often\, the theme is love: from bitter heartbreak to everlasting bliss\, they were the songs in the moment. A special subcategory of Rekisong is one where love and strife are about one’s place in the world: songs of emigration to the New World. \nStudents will sing rekisongs together and learn briefly about their history. On the second day the instructor will demonstrate how to write them – it’s easy! No knowledge of Finnish is required\, but even a little familiarity with the language is helpful. Registration closes December 5 or when sold out. \nLotta Hagfors (Charlotta Hagfors) is a singer and a folk musician from Helsinki\, Finland. After studying ethnomusicology at the University of Helsinki she started studying and exploring the world of folk song\, composition\, and improvisation at the Sibelius Academy. In 2017 she finished her Master’s degree in an international program\, “Nordic Master in Folk Music”\, which took place in Finland\, Sweden\, Denmark\, and Norway. She has performed all around the world with several bands and projects\, with a notable excursion to classical music – with a musical saw. Her musical field of interest covers folk singing in all of its many forms\, as well as vocal improvisation. Open mind and freedom are the things she most cherishes in all music. Her love of discovery and blending art forms has led her to perform and compose several theatre and dance productions. With a strong background in vocal ensembles\, she has won competitions (International Competition for Acapella Groups\, Tampereen Sävel 2017 with Ilo Ensemble) and written music for vocal groups too. Occasionally she works at the Finnish National Broadcasting Company YLE as a radio announcer.
