SUMMARY:Rekilaulu (beautiful & hilarious folk songs) – Virtual Singing Workshop
DESCRIPTION:Rekisongs are a beautiful\, hilarious kind of Finnish folk song. They were popular all over Finland\, especially in the 19th century Ostrobothnia. They were a creative outlet for the youth in particular. Rekisong is all about singing beautiful melodies and discovering rhymes. Often\, the theme is love: from bitter heartbreak to everlasting bliss\, they were the songs in the moment. A special subcategory of Rekisong is one where love and strife are about one’s place in the world: songs of emigration to the New World. \nStudents will sing rekisongs together and learn briefly about their history. On the second day the instructor will demonstrate how to write them – it’s easy! No knowledge of Finnish is required\, but even a little familiarity with the language is helpful. Registration closes December 5 or when sold out. \nLotta Hagfors (Charlotta Hagfors) is a singer and a folk musician from Helsinki\, Finland. After studying ethnomusicology at the University of Helsinki she started studying and exploring the world of folk song\, composition\, and improvisation at the Sibelius Academy. In 2017 she finished her Master’s degree in an international program\, “Nordic Master in Folk Music”\, which took place in Finland\, Sweden\, Denmark\, and Norway. She has performed all around the world with several bands and projects\, with a notable excursion to classical music – with a musical saw. Her musical field of interest covers folk singing in all of its many forms\, as well as vocal improvisation. Open mind and freedom are the things she most cherishes in all music. Her love of discovery and blending art forms has led her to perform and compose several theatre and dance productions. With a strong background in vocal ensembles\, she has won competitions (International Competition for Acapella Groups\, Tampereen Sävel 2017 with Ilo Ensemble) and written music for vocal groups too. Occasionally she works at the Finnish National Broadcasting Company YLE as a radio announcer.

SUMMARY:Saijaleena Rantanen Presents Finnish North American Working-Class Women and Music
DESCRIPTION:Finnish American Folk Arts Series: Saijaleena Rantanen Presents Finnish North American Working-Class Women and Music in the Early 20th Century \nThis presentation will focus on working-class women of Finnish background and their musical activities in early 20th century North America. Women played an active role in organizing the cultural life of immigrants. They also wrote songs\, sang in choirs and participated in demonstrations in defense of women’s rights and better working conditions. Who were these women and what do we know about them? The songs by and about Finnish immigrant women offer an interesting perspective on the activities and goals of working-class women at the grassroots level. \nPlease register for this free virtual event here. \nSaijaleena Rantanen works as a university lecturer at the Sibelius Academy of the University of the Arts Helsinki. She is a music historian\, and her research interests are in social\, political\, and cultural history of music. She is particularly interested in people and phenomena that have been marginalized in history. Her research interests include migration\, labor history and the role of women as musical and cultural influencers. In her current research project\, she is studying the music culture of the ”Red Finns” in North America and Soviet Karelia from the late 19th century until the late 1930s. \nCo-sponsored by FinnFest USA and the Nordic Folklife project at the University of Wisconsin–Madison\, the folk arts series features artists\, community members\, culture workers\, and scholars—all experts in various forms of Finnish folk arts. Links to the virtual program will be sent to your registered email address one day in advance of the event. \nAlthough this event is free and open to anyone who can and wants to take part\, we do hope you will consider donating to the FinnFest USA organization\, whose hard work and dedication makes events like this possible. If you have the ability to donate any amount of money to FinnFest to support future programming\, please visit their donation page here. Thank you for your generosity.

SUMMARY:Fin-A-Billy: American Roots Music and Rebellion in Finland
DESCRIPTION:March 26th\, 2022\nSaturday starting at 11:00 am\nVirtual \nSo far in our Music Series\, we have explored the process in which many Finnish-Americans have connected with Finnish language and culture through music. But during the 1970s\, there was an enormous American roots music boom in Finland\, spawning hundreds of Fin-A-Billy (Finnish rockabilly\, country\, bluegrass\, blues\, and related genres) bands with thousands of fans. In our March continuation of the FinnFest USA Music Series\, folklorist and ethnomusicologist Nathan Gibson will share his research and musical samples of the ways many Finns have connected with American culture through American roots music over the last 60 years. \nNathan Gibson is a folklorist\, ethnomusicologist\, musician\, and the Audio-Visual Preservation Archivist for the University of Wisconsin-Madison. At UW-Madison\, Nate runs the audio preservation studio at Mills Music Library and works with Anna Rue and Marcus Cederström on the “Sustaining Scandinavian Folk Arts in the Upper Midwest” and “Nordic Folklife” projects. Nathan was a guest researcher at Tampere University between 2012 and 2013\, during which time he was researching his dissertation on American Roots Music in Finland and both touring and recording with several Fin-A-Billy bands. He has visited more than 50 cities in Finland\, can sing at least two songs in Finnish\, is a big fan of Eero Aarnio’s ball chair\, but is still not a fan of salmiakki. \nFor information and to register\, click here. \nAll lectures are free\, but the participants are encouraged to support FinnFest USA with a donation.
